Heat treatment is a process that involves applying non-flammable heat on wood. During the process, the core rises to 132.8 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is maintained for 30 minutes. This process helps prevent damage caused by harmful insects and other contaminants. Heat treated pallets or HT pallets are also more durable.

Heat treating wood pallets helps remove insects or organisms that may not be visible to the eye. This is crucial to reduce the risk of pest infestation when crossing state lines. Heat treating also takes water out of the wood to reduce pallet weight and makes it more water resistant.

Here are a few things that can help you understand the heat treatment process better and know what you can expect from a wood pallet crusher manufacturer

Do Pallets Need to be Heat Treated?

For pallets that don’t carry food-grade products and are not exported to other countries heat treatment is not required. On the other hand, if your business requires pallets to store food items or export to other countries, heat treatment is needed. International shipments with wood packaging require HT stamped pallets that indicate that the wood pallets have been treated before shipping.

How Does Heat Treatment Work?

The heat treatment process involves debarking the wood pallets and then heating them until the core temperature reaches 132.8 degrees Fahrenheit for a minimum of 30 consecutive minutes. After undergoing the process, wood pallets are stamped with a mark of compliance.

ISPM 15 provides specific guidelines for debarking. It begins the decontamination process since most insects are found within the bark. Usually, the bark is removed before the pallets are constructed. However, an inspection is required to know if there is a need to remove any additional bark from the pallet.

There are several treatment methods for wood pallets. However, heat treatment is the most preferred one. The process includes arranging wood pallets in a large kiln to facilitate even heat distribution. The wood pallets must have an internal core temperature of a minimum of 132.8 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 30 minutes.

After heat treatment, the wood pallets are removed and inspected to ensure compliance with ISPM 15 requirements. It is followed by stamping with the correct IPPC markings. The stamping signifies that the wood pallet meets ISPM 15 standards.

Benefits of Heat-Treated Pallets

1. Compliance for Exports

Heat treating wood pallets ensures compliance for international trade. This reduces the chance of shipping delays and ensures an efficient supply chain.

2. Longer Lifespan

Heated pallets have a longer lifespan compared to untreated wood pallets. They also maintain the strength to be used over and over again.

3. Reduced Shipping Costs

Treated wood pallets weigh lower. This helps reduce shipping costs.

4. Lower Risk of Damage

Heat treated pallets are more durable which reduces the risk of damage during transportation.

5. Less Environmental Impact

They are safe and pose no risk of exposure to harmful chemicals.

Heat treatment is important to lower the risks of product contamination and ensure compliance for international trade. However, heat treatment is not required if your business doesn’t need wood pallets to export to other countries or store food items.  At Yulong Machine Co., Ltd, we are professional manufacturers of pallet machines for agriculture, fishery, pasturage, and forest.
